The Latvian construction company Merks, part of the Estonian-based Merko Ehitus Group, and Mitnija, one of the largest construction companies in Lithuania, are beginning to implement an EUR 100.2 million assignment to build the Akropole shopping and entertainment center in Riga, Latvia. Merks has been appointed as the project’s general contractor; Mitnija’s share comprises 50 percent, i.e. EUR 50.1 million.
Merks and Mitnija will begin construction work in April 2017; the center is scheduled for completion in January 2019. The client is M257, SIA, a company in the Akropolis Group, which develops Akropolis shopping and entertainment centers in Lithuania. The group currently owns centers in Vilnius, Klaipėda and Šiauliai.
The new 98,000 sq. m Akropole shopping and entertainment center will be built on Maskava Street in Riga; of its total area, 9,000 sq. m, will be devoted to an office building. The center will house more than 200 retail stores, as well as cafes, restaurants, an ice arena, a movie theater, a bowling club and children’s playground areas. The scope of work will also include extensive infrastructure supporting the multifunctional center – parking, improvements to surrounding streets and landscaping.
Mitnija has had long-term cooperation with Akropolis Group. In 2003-2007, the company built Akropolis shopping centers in Kaunas and Klaipėda, which have a total retail and entertainment area of nearly 160,000 sq. m, as well as an Akropolis office building and the second stage of the shopping center in Vilnius.
